Things To Know
Bulgaria is European - ancient, new and emerging. It has the same latitude
as northern Spain and, clockwise from the south, borders Turkey, Greece, Macedonia,
Serbia and Romania. To the east, Bulgaria has the (unfortunately named) Black
Sea which is actually azure, with clear, clean water and golden sands. If you
like hills, there are four large mountain ranges (to some 2 - 2,900m) with unspoilt
national parks and charming ski resorts.
Away from the commercial resorts, Bulgaria
is practically unknown to tourists. If you want a 'new' destination - this
is it. There's hiking in untouched landscapes, endangered
flora and fauna and an emerging village/backpacker style accommodation
and food. It's friendly and it's still authentic!
Bulgaria is now stable, politically and economically.
Despite this, it's a considerably cheaper place to vacation than the rest of
Europe. As a comparison, a coffee at a street stall will be 0.30 Eu. In the
very best and trendiest café in the capital Sofia it'll be 1.0 Eu. Other
prices follow in the same sort of proportions. A lot of spots are being
tidied up after 15+ years of neglect - the country is moving, it's
interesting and it's an adventure!
