About This Project
This website was produced by the British
Council in Bulgaria under
its Branding Bulgaria project.
Project Mission
Branding Bulgaria aims to develop adequate, up-to-date
ideas for representing Bulgaria abroad and to
stimulate public debate on the country's international image internally.
Background
Between 2001 and 2003 consultants from the UK held several workshops
with Bulgarian professionals from the fields of advertising,
tourism, mass communications, academia and the arts. The workshops
generated a body of ideas identifying current problems with Bulgaria's
image and suggesting ways of improving it. The ideas were
summarized in the book 'Towards a Strategy for Representing
Bulgaria Abroad'. (To get one, please contact Leah

Pilot campaign
The Experience Bulgaria website is part of a pilot, web-based promotional
campaign implementing some of these ideas. The campaign is targeted
at young people studying in the United Kingdom. The site was
advertised simultaneously on five UK campuses: the Universities
of Manchester, Oxford, Cambridge, Glasgow and the University
College of London through print and web media. It was launched
on 26 April 2004.
Partners
Manchester Business School conducted a marketing research on perceptions
of Bulgaria among students in the United Kingdom. Co-funding
for the production of this site was provided by the
Open Society
Institute in Sofia. British
Airways and Bulgarian
travel agencies Odysseia In and
SunShineTours
provided free trips to be used as awards in a game promoting
the website.

The
British Council in Bulgaria aims to increase appreciation
of the UK's values, creative ideas and achievements and to build
mutually beneficial relationships between people in the UK and
Bulgaria.
Since 1992 we have been promoting educational, technical and cultural
co-operation between Bulgaria and the UK through our offices in
Sofia and Varna as part of a network of 218 offices in 109 countries
worldwide. We implement the Cultural Agreement between Bulgaria
and the UK.
